The Way Golf Should Be Played
Inverness’ caddie program dates back nearly to the Club’s inception in the early 1900s. More than a century has passed since the 1920 Inverness yearbook set forth many of the caddie rules that remain in effect today. Caddies registered daily with the caddie master and were sent out in turn. Since then, the advent of the motorized golf cart caused the demise of caddies programs at many clubs. At Inverness, however, carts roll down the fairways only under very limited circumstances, and caddies remain a pillar of the Inverness golf experience.
Caddies at Inverness are not only trained how to master the work of a caddie, but learn the game of golf. They are taught how to anticipate golfers’ needs and establish rapport. As one of the largest employers of teenagers in the Toledo metropolitan area, Inverness Club employs about 400 caddies annually. Every aspect of the job is covered including counting and sorting clubs, caring for the golfer’s equipment, where to stand, how to follow the flight of the ball, how to pace-off yardage, tending flags, and social skills. The traditional spirit that is displayed throughout Inverness Club extends onto the golf course with the Club’s caddie program.
Evans Scholarship Program
We are proud of an over 70-year association with the Evans Scholars Foundation. Throughout this partnership, Inverness Club and its dedicated membership have collectively raised over $2.2 million in support of the Evans Scholars Foundation. As we reflect on our achievements, Inverness has an impressive roster of 184 Evans Scholars alumni to date, including three individuals who will graduate this year. We are thrilled to note that the 2023-2024 academic year currently encompasses 21 active Evans Scholars, while we celebrate the awarding of scholarships to two new Scholars in 2024.
An echo from our storied past resonates, to the 1920 U.S. Open when Inverness Club made history by opening its doors to playing professionals—a tradition that we are honored to uphold through the Evans Scholars Invitational. We proudly extend this tradition, not to just playing professionals, but also to esteemed PGA Professionals from across the globe. Their participation in the Inverness Evans Scholars Invitational aligns seamlessly with our values and serves as a testament to a dedication to the Evans Scholars Foundation. In a metaphorical sense, the funds amassed from this event bear a resemblance to the doors Inverness once opened for playing professionals. Yet, this time, the doors unlocked are not those of our clubhouse, but rather the doors of opportunity to esteemed institutions of higher learning.
