Highlights:
- First U.S. Open won by a player using steel shafts
- First U.S. Open to be nationally broadcast on radio
- First U.S. Open to use the standard golf ball measuring 1.68 inches in diameter
Remembered for being the longest in major golf history. It took 144 holes to settle – eight rounds of golf. The USGA installed the 18-hole playoff after this tournament, which remains the format to present day.

- A field of around 50 players entered the event and most were from the Midwest.
- Players were forced to play with old or refurbished golf balls.

- One of the first showcases of a relatively new product, Fiberglas shafts.
- Weather conditions caused play to be suspended and necessitated adjustments to the tee box selection for the final round, shortening the course by about 100 yards.
- Jack Nicklaus's first U.S. Open
Dick Mayer and Cary Middlecoff were tied after the final round. In the playoffs, Mayer turned the competition into a one-sided affair, scoring a 72 to Middlecoff's 79.

U.S. AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Highlights:
- After a switch in format for the previous 8 years, the U.S. Amateur returned to match play at Inverness Club.
- All twenty members of the combined American and British Walker Cup teams played in the 1973 Amateur.
- Qualifier for the Masters at Augusta National were issued to the eight U.S. Amateur quarterfinalists.

- The tournament's main story revolved around Lon Hinkle's unconventional strategy at the 8th hole, leading to emergency measures including the overnight planting of a tree, which later played a role in Irwin's crucial birdie during the third round.
- Despite lacking in traditional drama, the tournament's climax saw Hale Irwin's birdie at the 8th hole, a stroke that ultimately secured his two-shot victory.
- Hale Irwin’s second of three U.S. Open Championship wins.

Highlights:
- Paul Azinger heeded Byron Nelson's advice to play for the middle of the greens at Inverness.
- Inverness Club offered a leader board that became a "Who's Who" of golf including John Daly, Paul Azinger, & Greg Norman.
- Azinger strung together four consecutive birdies in the final round, to force a playoff.
The playoff between Azinger and Norman, the twelfth in Championship history, saw tense moments, with Norman narrowly missing a crucial birdie attempt and Azinger ultimately clinching his first major championship victory.
2003

Highlights:
- Eighth Major Championship hosted by Inverness
- Tom Watson fired an opening round 66, becoming the first golfer ever to lead the initial round of both the U.S. Open and the U.S Senior Open, in the same year.
- Making his debut at Inverness in 1957, golf legend Jack Nicklaus made his last Inverness appearance, at the 2003 U.S. Senior Open.

U.S. JUNIOR AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

Highlights:
- Summerhays was 3 down to No. 19 seed Austin Greaser after 11 holes in the quarterfinal round, and 2 down after seven holes to Thomas Pagdin in the semifinals. He went on to win 5 of the last 7 holes against Greaser, and 6 out of 7 against Pagdin, employing a similar philosophy each time.
- Since the 2019 Junior Amateur some of the field including Michael Thorbjornsen, Akshay Bhatia, Karl Vilips, Austin Greaser, Maxwell Moldovan, and Gordon Sargent have made great strides to advance to the next level of golf.
